Do you remember the scene in the movie, Black Panther, on "Challenge Day" when the people on the wall of water moved rhythmically to the beat of the drum? Do you recall how compelling the drum beat was? Jabari Exum, drummer and choreographer on the movie Black Panther, will perform using the acoustic drum and engage the audience with storytelling. It has been said, "he brought Wakanda to Wakanda." At Wakandacon Jabari will bring the spirit of the drum to us in Chicago - in a form he has developed which fuses West African Drumming and the Latin Tradition with Hip Hop Music.

Join CMASJ as they lead attendees in creating activism buttons that raise awareness for a cause in order to push for change. Participants will be encouraged to use their creativity to design and reflect on social issue that they are most passionate about.

How do we tell Black girls that they are beautiful, smart, and worthy of pursing their dreams when they live in a world that is set up against them?Director, educator, and playwright Sydney Chatman presents her inspirational and award-winning production. Chatman’s production follows 10 year-old, Bessie Mae whose fear of the world outside her front door prevents her from pursuing her dreams. Bessie Mae feels helpless, but through the encouragement of her grandmother and the neighborhood "Fly Girls," she overcomes by using her voice as a catalyst for change and social empowerments. See excerpts from this award-winning production and a special Wakandacon tribute to Black women, young ladies, and girls in STEAM.

The Children's Museum of Art and Social Justice presents Earth 2: a series of drawings created by artists, ages 7-15, of their imagined futuristic worlds. Students participated in discussions around the distant future- what would people wear? Where would they live? How would they get around? How might people relate with one another? The act of such intense imagining alters not just the possibilities of what can be far in the future, but also helps us see what we can alter in our current world as well. The sourced images that served as a starting point for the artists are from Nasa's images archive.
